While there are many amazing military charities and social clubs around the world, we felt no one organization was serving the social needs of this current generation of veterans. With the help of many of our veteran volunteers, The Teams was born. Gaming and all things geek is as pervasive within the military community as it is within the general population, possibly even more so with the current generation of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
The goal of the Teams Program is to build local groups of military, veterans, and civilians in order to promote a welcoming community where these groups of individuals can relax, have fun, and be accepted. The agreed key to success is keeping the military to civilian ratio at 50/50 from the top down with Team co-leaders, one veteran and one civilian.
The Teams uses gaming as a catalyst and common ground to forge lasting friendships between veterans and civilians. Teams are set up in cities and communities around the country and operate independently of one another. Each Team has at least one in-person event every month, known as Mandatory Fun. These events provide often insular veterans and service-members a way to branch out and meet new people. OSD civilians are able to mingle with veterans and see the military side of important issues. Mandatory Fun also allows our civilian volunteers and donors a chance to see the people that their donations directly benefit, all in a fun and worry-free setting. Past Mandatory Fun activities have included paint-balling, attending sporting events, board game nights, or simply meeting up for a cup of coffee and conversation. Events are family friendly and offer fun and relaxation for all ages and most events are low cost thanks to our community partners.
When not out having Mandatory Fun or sitting behind a keyboard, The Teams are sometimes mobilized to act as volunteers at conventions and expos where Operation Supply Drop has a presence. This affords Teams members an opportunity to help Operation Supply Drop further it’s international mission by acting as boots on the ground at local events. Each Team also has their own 8-Bit Salute page in support of the yearly OSD fundraising campaign.
